Although it may be mistaken simply for an alternate terrain skin, it is in fact a type of interactive block, confirmed by the fact that Meat Boy does not leave a blood trail when running or sliding on it (a phenomenon present with other interactive blocks). Generic ground that does not appear in all planes of reality will take on the appearance of random lines regardless of the plane it is present in. This recursive rendering effect is also present in planes of reality the portal isn't in. While the portals may appear to be endless tunnels of rotating squares, this is only because of a recursive rendering effect there are in fact only three concentric squares per portal (the middle-sized square rotating the opposite direction of the other two). The cyan portals take players "up" one plane (deep source > source > visual), while the navy portals move players "down" one plane (visual > source > deep source). They appear as either cyan (light blue) or navy (dark blue) sets of concentric squares. Portals are the only way for the player to move between the planes of reality, which are activated by being attacked. If the goal is reached in either of the source planes, Nugget will not appear the player will still end the level shortly after death since they respawn in the visual plane. The player will start and respawn and must end in the visual plane. Everything else is effectively in stasis when the player is not in that plane. Interactive blocks can appear across planes, and interactions with them will also affect their counterparts in other planes. To distinguish these two planes, the main source plane has white source windows while the deep source plane has black source windows. The sixth level of 0xDeadNeef has an additional "deep source plane" accessed by attacking a navy portal in the source plane. The background is normal in the visual plane, but is replaced by Dr. Generic ground and stationary hazards appear in the "visual plane", but are replaced by source-code windows and orange error windows, respectively, in the "source plane". The player can tell which plane of reality they are on by observing the ground and background. 0xDeadBeef itself also has its own level with mechanics from every world plus an extra third plane of reality. 0xDeadBeef has a unique glitchy appearance and two planes of reality that the player can transition between by directly attacking the main gimmick of this world: portals.Įach world of the game has a level in this world with the corresponding number and the mechanics found in those worlds unlocked by (PLEASE INVESTIGATE). It is unlocked by completing The Other Side, and by extension, the game's main story. 0xDeadBeef, often referred to as Dead Beef or the Glitch World, is the extra world in Super Meat Boy Forever.
